The Glockenspiel in Marienplatz is that it is one of the largest carillon glockenspiels in Europe, with 43 bells that weigh a total of 5,500 kg (12,125 Ibs). The glockenspiel also features 32 life-sized figures that move and dance to the rusic during the show, which lasts around 15 minutes. The figures include knights, jesters, and dancers, as well as a golden bird that chirps at the end of the performance. The glockenspiel in Marienplatz tells two different stories during its performance, which takes place twice a day, at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. The first story is called “The Cooper’s Dance” and features the figures of the cooper (barrel maker) and his apprentices, who dance and celebrate the end of the plague in Munich in 1517. The second story is called “The Schäffler’s Dance” and depicts the Schäffler (barrel makers) dancing to celebrate the end of the Thirty Years’ War in 1683.
