Ancient Petra "treasury" is one of the most incredible historical monuments in the world. The structure is believed to have been the mausoleum of the Nabatean King Aretas IV in the 1st century AD. It became known as "Al-Khazneh", or The Treasury, in the early 19th century by the area's Bedouins as they had believed it contained treasures. P.s. the previous reel was filmed at location named "The Monastery" which is also named by bedouins because of possible reuse of structure in Christian times (unfortunately a lot of carvings were destroyed back then). Probably the structure served for Nebateans as a tomb or for religious rituals. Although there's an official path that leads up the "monastery", only bedouins can visit now as they lived here for centuries - so please respect the history and don't climb up there if you visit. Drones are not permitted in Jordan unless it is used with special permit like for our current filming project with @visitjordan

A few things to know before you visit Petra 🇯🇴💫 SAVE this for future trip planning! ⭐️ Spend at least 2 days: Petra is huge! And although you may be able to see it all in a day, it would be a very long day. I recommend giving yourself 2 days there so you can fully experience the ruins and not be rushed. ⭐️ Don’t miss the Monastery: Towards the end of the Archeological Park is the Monastery. It requires a long walk from the main entrance so people often miss it. We were there around 4pm and there were barely any crowds! ⭐️ Start at sunrise for the main entrance: The gates open at 6am and I recommend getting there as close to this as possible! We arrived around 6:30 and there were already people there but we were able to get to the Treasury with minimal crowds! ⭐️ Wear comfortable shoes, modest clothing, and light colours: You’re going to be walking a lot, and it’s going to be hot. But Jordan is a Muslim country and therefore you want to be respectful and wear modest clothing. Light, loose clothing is perfect! ⭐️ Start from Little Petra if you arrive later: On our first day we didn’t enter Petra until after lunch. The main entrance would have been too crowded. I recommend you enter through Little Petra and hike from the back gate to the Monastery to avoid crowds later in the day. ⭐️ Petra is more than the Treasury: It’s a whole ancient city!! There is so much more to see than the iconic Treasury. Ancient City: Petra is an ancient city that dates back to 312 BC, making it over 2,000 years old. It was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. 2. Hidden City: Its name means “rock” in Greek, fitting as it’s also known as the ‘Rose City’ due to the color of the stone from which it is carved. It remained hidden to the Western world until 1812. 3. Engineering Marvel: The Nabateans, the original inhabitants, were skilled engineers. They built a complex water management system that included dams, cisterns, and water channels. 4. The Treasury: The most famous structure in Petra, Al-Khazneh (“The Treasury”), is thought to have been constructed in the 1st century BC. Despite its name, it was probably a temple or royal tomb, not a treasury. 5. In Film: The Treasury is also famous from its appearance in many films, perhaps most notably in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.’ 6. World Heritage Site: Petra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. 7. Size: The archaeological park at Petra is massive, covering about 102 square miles. Despite decades of excavation, only about 15% of the city has been uncovered. 8. Petra - The Lost City and one of the “Seven Wonders of the World” 🪔 💡Fun fact: The Swiss traveler Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, rediscovered Petra in 1812. He hoodwinked the guardians of the site by pretending to be an Arab from India who wanted to make a sacrifice at the tomb of the Prophet Aaron. 📸 How to get to this viewpoint: This is one of the two Insta-perfect Treasury photo spots from above. I prefer it more than the higher one so if you don’t want to do the two get to this one - easier to reach and more photogenic 😊 Climbing here is only allowed with a local guide after paying a small fee to bring you there.
