Take a day trip to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which is about 90 minutes from Colombo. You can watch baby elephants being fed and bathed, and even get up close and personal with some of them.

After your visit to the elephant orphanage, stop by the Millennium Elephant Foundation, which is a sanctuary for elephants that were once used for manual labor. You can take a ride on an elephant or even bathe with them in the river.
