Morning
Start your day with a visit to the iconic Garden of the Gods. This is one of the most popular attractions in Shawnee National Forest, known for its breathtaking rock formations and panoramic views. The Observation Trail is a must-do here, offering a relatively easy hike with stunning vistas. Don't forget your camera! For breakfast, grab a quick bite at The Chocolate Factory in nearby Golconda before heading out.
Afternoon
After soaking in the views at Garden of the Gods, head over to Bell Smith Springs. This area offers several hiking trails that lead you through lush forests, over natural stone bridges, and past beautiful waterfalls. It's a great spot for both hiking and photography. For lunch, stop by Shawnee Restaurant & Lounge in Harrisburg for some local cuisine.
Evening
In the evening, join a guided tour with Rim Rock Recreational Area Tour. This tour will take you through some lesser-known but equally stunning parts of Shawnee National Forest. After your tour, unwind with dinner at 17th Street Barbecue in Marion before heading back to your accommodation.

Waterfalls and Wilderness
Morning
Begin your second day with a visit to Burden Falls. This is one of the tallest waterfalls in Illinois and offers a serene setting for some morning exploration. The hike to the falls is relatively short but can be steep in places. Enjoy breakfast at Midland Inn in nearby Golconda before setting off.
Afternoon
Next, make your way to Pounds Hollow Recreation Area. Here you can enjoy swimming or just relax by the lake. There are also several hiking trails around the area if you're up for more adventure. For lunch, head over to The Red Onion in Equality for some delicious Southern comfort food.
Evening
Wrap up your trip with an evening visit to Cave-in-Rock State Park. Explore the famous cave that was once used by river pirates and enjoy scenic views of the Ohio River from various lookout points. Join an evening tour if available or simply wander on your own. End your day with dinner at E-town River Restaurant in Elizabethtown before heading home.
