Experience a traditional water puppet show at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, a unique art form that originated in Vietnam's rice paddies. Then head to Quan An Ngon for dinner, a restaurant that serves up a variety of Vietnamese street food favorites in a lively atmosphere.

Take a day trip to the Perfume Pagoda, a complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the limestone cliffs of the Huong Tich mountains. Take a scenic boat ride along the Yen River before climbing the stairs to the temple complex, where you can light incense and make offerings to Buddha.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant in the nearby village of Duc, where you can try some of the region's famous spring rolls and grilled meats. Then head back to Hanoi to explore the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first national university built in 1070.
