Afternoon
After a sobering morning, head over to Miyajima Island, which is known for its iconic Itsukushima Shrine and the floating torii gate. The island is also home to many deer that roam freely and are considered sacred by the locals. Take a stroll around the island, visit the many souvenir shops and enjoy a delicious meal of Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory pancake filled with meat, seafood, and vegetables.
Evening
Return to Hiroshima and take a stroll around the city center, visit the Hondori shopping arcade, and try some of the local street food. For dinner, head over to Okonomimura, a three-story building with over 25 restaurants that specialize in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. You can choose from a variety of toppings and sauces and watch as the chefs cook the pancake right in front of you.
Morning
Start your day by visiting the Hiroshima Castle, which was originally built in the 16th century and has been reconstructed after being destroyed in the atomic bombing. The castle houses a museum that showcases the history and culture of Hiroshima. Next, head over to the Shukkeien Garden, which is a traditional Japanese garden that features a pond, bridges, and tea houses.
Afternoon
For lunch, try some Hiroshima-style tsukemen, a type of ramen that is served with a separate bowl of dipping broth. Afterward, take a short train ride to the Mazda Museum, which showcases the history and development of the Mazda car company. You can see vintage and modern cars, engines, and other exhibits that highlight the technological innovation of the company.
Evening
Return to the city center and visit the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, which features exhibitions and installations by local and international artists. For dinner, head over to Nagataya, a famous restaurant that serves Hiroshima-style tsukemen and other noodle dishes.
